Trigger Unhappy

79218020_640You could argue that guns kill people or that people kill people; it’s semantics mixed up with semi-automatics. What cannot be denied is that people kill themselves… with firearms… a lot.

in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 11,078 Americans were killed by firearms, a depressing statistic, for sure. However, did you know that the same year 19,392 took their own lives with firearms? That’s a staggering figure and one that begs politicians and pundits to reconsider their stances on gun control and the availability of mental health care.

No matter which side of the fence you fall to, it is imperative that we think responsibly® about suicide, raising awareness and building better safety nets.

During Season 1 of The High Bar, The Stranger‘s Brendan Kiley dropped in to discuss the broad implications of our national suicide epidemic and highlight some of the appropriate (and less appropriate) responses to these tragic situations and desperate individuals.
